I'm running for the Michigan State Senate because the cost of living is crushing working people, and I believe that government can make our lives in Detroit and Downriver easier. 

I am the proud son of a UAW Autoworker, a lifelong Michigander, and had the honor of serving as State Representative and House Majority Floor Leader, where we delivered real wins to protect our environment, invest in our schools, and cut taxes for working people. But, there's still more work to do, and I'm hopeful you'll give me the chance to continue fighting for the working people who built this state.

Abraham Aiyash is committed to building a Michigan that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few. Abe made history as Michigan’s youngest-ever House Majority Leader. In the House, he led efforts to protect people from unfair utility practices, expand access to affordable drinking water, and strengthen unions and worker protections. Now he's running for State Senate to keep fighting for Detroit and Downriver families. In the State Senate, he will freeze DTE bills for five years, end the zip code tax on auto insurance, lower housing costs, and pass universal childcare.

    Roots & Family

    Born and raised in Michigan, Abe grew up in a working-class immigrant household where service to others was a core value. His father worked in the auto industry and his mother worked tirelessly to support their family, shaping Abe's deep belief that government should work for working people, not special interests.

    Elected to the Michigan House

    In 2020, Abe was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, where he represented communities in Hamtramck and Detroit — including Boston Edison, Virginia Park, North End, Midtown, Downtown, and the Eastside — with honesty, transparency, and courage. In the House, he took on big challenges, from tackling water affordability and environmental injustice to expanding economic opportunity and protecting civil rights for all.

    Making History As Majority Floor Leader

    In 2022, his colleagues selected him as Majority Floor Leader, making history as the first Muslim and Arab American Majority Leader in the country. In that position, Abe helped set the legislative agenda and was integral in advancing priorities that matter to families across the state, from clean energy to worker protections.

    From Grassroots Organizer to Lawmaker

    Abe's career in public life began as a grassroots organizer, training leaders and connecting directly with Michiganders to understand what truly shapes their lives. He worked in the office of State Representative Rose Mary Robinson and served on a local Recycling Commission, where he championed environmental protections, community health, and sustainability. Abe holds a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, where he studied political theory and constitutional democracy.

    Running For Michigan State Senate - District 1

    Now running for the Michigan State Senate in District 1 - which stretches from Detroit through Downriver communities like Wyandotte - Abe is ready to bring his experience, energy, and commitment to Lansing. He believes in open government, accountable leadership, and policies that put people first, because a stronger Michigan is built when every community thrives.

THE PLATFORM

Delivering for Michigan's working families.

  • Families shouldn’t have to choose between heat, groceries, and rent. Yet rising utility bills driven by corporate greed are pushing households to the brink. For years, our rates have gotten higher and higher, yet service has gotten worse. 

    • Prevent the MPSC from accepting any rate hike increases for 5 years

    • Hold monopoly utilities like DTE Energy accountable by making every case before the MPSC a contested case

    • Ban utility companies from spending money to influence our elections 

    Utilities should serve the public, not exploit it.

    In the state that put the world on wheels, families shouldn’t be priced out of owning a car. But right now, where you live determines how much you pay, which means Detroit and Downriver have some of the highest car insurance rates in the country. Lawmakers passed a bill that was supposed to change this, but they wrote in a loophole that allows insurance companies to continue charging different rates based on where you live.

    • Establish People’s Car Insurance - an affordable auto insurance public-option

    • End the zip code tax that drives up car insurance rates

    • Hold insurance companies accountable

    • Make transportation affordable for workers and their families

    Your address shouldn’t decide whether you can get to work or take your kids to school.

  • Rent is out of control, and high home prices mean that owning a home is out of reach for many families. Detroit and Downriver property taxes are some of the highest in the nation, and too many good homes sit in disrepair. 

    • Ease restrictive zoning laws, to make it cheaper to build affordable housing

    • Lower historically high property taxes

    • Repeal the statewide ban on rent stabilization and rent control ordinances 

    • Fund the largest home repair program in Detroit’s history

    Every Michigander deserves safe housing that they can afford.

  • For many families, the cost of childcare is higher than rent or tuition. Parents are forced to make impossible choices- not because they don’t want to work, but because the system is broken.

    • Enact affordable childcare for all

    • Pay childcare workers living wages, and support childcare providers

    • Make it possible to grow a family without financial fear

    Raising the next generation should be a source of pride, not stress.

  • For too long, Detroit & Downriver neighborhoods have been treated as sacrifice zones for corporate polluters. Big Tech wants to plant massive data centers in Michigan, consuming enormous amounts of water and energy while ordinary families foot the bill. Families breathe dirty air and drink polluted water and corporations avoid accountability. That ends now. 

    • Enact a moratorium on hyperscale data centers to study the strain on our grid, our water, and increased costs for families

    • Pass polluter-pay legislation that makes corporations responsible for cleanup costs instead of shifting them onto taxpayers and residents

    • Protect our waterways from corporate contamination, including defending communities like Wyandotte from industrial polluters along the Detroit River

    No family should get sick because a corporation decided their neighborhood was an acceptable place to dump its costs.
